Medical marijuana for menstrual cramps may soon be available for New Jersey women suffering from the monthly discomfort.
Such legislation has been introduced in the New Jersey General Assembly, which is the lower house of the states Congress. If successful, residents will be able to get a medical marijuana prescription to alleviate the ails that come with monthly menstruation. Tim, the only male to author the proposed marijuana for menstruation law, said that the current policy against use for menstrual cramps was both unfair to both women and men, reported local paper Hoboken Patch. By denying women in New Jersey access to a means of treating dysmenorrhea, our state fails to acknowledge the serious impact it can have on their wellness and productivity. Furthermore, from an economic standpoint, New Jersey is missing out on millions of dollars in tax revenue due to the restrictive nature of its medical marijuana law. While this will affect women directly, the financial benefit ultimately will be positive for everyone in the state. Medical marijuana for menstrual cramps may be a reality in New Jersey. Spencer pointed out that menstrual cramps may have been unfairly left off the list because only half of the population suffers from them. Even among women, most do not experience the intense symptoms that hit sufferers of conditions like dysmenorrhea or endometriosis, said Spencer. For much of history, medical issues that impact women have been ignored or downplayed, leaving far too many individuals to suffer in silence. This legislation recognizes that, in severe cases, dysmenorrhea can be a debilitating condition that has a limiting effect on womens lives. As nearly half of U.S. states have legalized medical marijuana is some capacity, the list of ailments that you can get a prescription for are spreading further and further. In many, however, the drug is only available if patients are not responding to other treatments or if they are experiencing extreme symptoms. I dont want this to be a joke to people. Its not a joke to women. [embedded content] That hasnt convinced everyone that medical marijuana is the future for of treating period pains. Dr. Ranit Mishori, a professor of family medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine, was less than convinced about its viability as a treatment, reported LiveScience.
